for me. He had some very old mahogany that he'd been storing for
25-30 years, and in conversation last winter I told him my dream guitar
would be a Gibson J-35, slope dread, body but with a 12 fret, slothead
neck. He said he thought he'd just build one of those and yesterday
I saw it for the first time. It is about 70% finished, and it is going to
be gorgeous. Btw, the wood was old when he got it, so he thinks it
could be 50-75 years old now.
Because of the way it sanded, he thinks the wood is Cuban mahogany
which is very rare today. The top is a wonderful piece of red spruce,
and it will have gold, 3 on a plate Waverlies for tuners, and we're keeping
the full-profile J-35 style neck (I like that style). He took the measurements
from his own 1939 J-35. Now all I have to do is figure out how to pay for
it! Needless to say someone is going to get a bargain on the best sounding
Eastman AC720 ever - when the new guitar is ready. Stay tuned!
