hello! great forum, my first post in here.
so its time to buy new guitar. now i have 10 years old laminated yamaha , but i want solid wood(top) guitar. i went to local musicstore and tested guitars in there. Yamaha was best to me to my budget ( under 250Euros )

two other choices are Johnson Carolina JD17 and Vintage v300. because i cant test these two on local musicstore i should have to buy these online like "blind". yamahas benefit is that i know what i can get to my money.Johnson Carolina JD17 benefit is good stories what ihave read about this guitar. Vintage v300 benefit is good reviews and cheap price.

Okay, I have played both the Yamaha and Johnson you mention. My opinion is the Yamaha will be a bit quieter, and the Johnson will be much bassier, louder, boomier. More dynamic. The Yamaha may sound sweeter to you, though. Some people may think that the Yamaha is better built than the Johnson, too.
I am sure others will also express their opinions for you.
And, sorry, this is the first time I have ever heard of the Vintage V300.

Welcome to the UBGF. We dont mind Bad English around here. Ours probably isn't any better.....

. I would say that it depends on what you are looking for in sound from your new guitar. If you're looking for a louder guitar, the Johnson would probably be a better one for you. The Yamaha FG720 seems to get great reviews and might also make a great choice. It sounds like a very nice guitar for the price. I think the Vintage is a little more budget than the other 2. I personally would choose between the Johnson and Yamaha. What did you think of the sound of the Yamaha? You played it at the store? How was the neck and feel of the guitar to you?

I can't recommend Stanford enough to you, they have a lovely guitar in there MSD100. If you get one of these you will not be disappointed.

OOOH! I didnt realize Stanford made models that were that affordable. I'll go with Paul on this one, Jussi. Scratch the other guitars! Get a Stanford. They are great guitars! Stanford MSD-100 all the way.....

thanks for your opinions. about sound what i`m looking for...i try find "all-around guitar" whose sound is good for playing with pick or fingers.
intune66, i feel comfortable with that yamaha neck and sound because i have played 10 years with yamaha.

one think what preoccupy in johnson is that how good is it build.can i be sure is it on good shape on next 5-10 year.yamaha feel so strong and good builded when you take it in your hand.

about JD-26.because its all solid wood, how tenderit is to humidity? what about sound, is it better than jd17?

Hi or Terve as we say in finnish,

I bought my JD-27 in spring 2006 and it is early made item so the top is thin. There was a small bellybulge which doesn't bother and hasn't grown. The guitar has survived first warm and then wet summer and central heating in wintertime without changes in shape. JD-27 is great to play and very loud and responsible. As I got an old laminated acoustic, the JD-27 and JD-26 are more demanding to play. Attac is fine, but JD's don't forgive mistakes so easyly. So I have made inprovement in my playing. JD-26 and JD27 have one piece neck when JD-16 and JD-17 neck is two pieced. The JD-27 has more deeper or bassy sound than JD-26. My JD-26 is later made and the top is thicker. The sound is great and rich. It has more treble than JD-27 (also when copared to the newer one with thicker top my friend owns). In my opinion the later made JD-26 (and the JD-27) finishing is better than the earlier JD-27 I own but the older one has bigger sound and is more responsive. Also JD-27's neck is little thinner. I don't feel the thicker neck as a problem as I'm now used to it with JD-26.

Solid wood acoustics have bigger and deeper sound than the laminated ones as the body responses more. Their sound gets usually better as they grow older.

Thank's to baroqueandroll for the Stanford info. I'd like to play one but does Stanford have representation in Finland? I tested some of the Johnsons here in Finland before I made the decision to buy JD-27 althoug they were not Carolina Series Johnsons.
