I've had a strap button the the treble side of the heel for almost 5 years. That's where it should go, but make sure to drill a pilot hole of the
proper diameter for the screw, same as installing on any other guitar.

I put mine on the treble side of the heel as well. I was a bit concerned with it's narrowness, but I was able to locate it in a good spot by drilling at
the proper angle. I tried it with a strap for the first time the other day and it works great.

Spot on, Kydave! Perfect..........
.
The biggest thing IMO (besides the right diameter bit) is to not go in too far with the bit. It CAN come out the other side, and you DONT want that!

I tape off a "stop point" on the bit at the proper depth. You can't see it, but I also use a leather washer.
I prefer the black anodized metal strap buttons. They're more subtle than chrome, but not succeptible to breaking like the lovely exotic wood/bone/ivory ones can be. And I don't want to drop a guitar from a pretty strap button breaking!

Any reason not to go with this one for a BR-163?
Black Strap Button The screw is 7/8" long. I would install it in the treble side of the heel as in kydave's photo. |

I used to put mine on the treble heel, but I've put two right in the heel cap and like that the best for me...

That method, into the heel cap, is an old style that is not recommended these days. You're putting a hole and strain where the wood is the absolute
thinnest and least strong. Never a good idea. Also the guitar doesn't balance as well, especially on dreads, as it tends to tip forward if you're not
holding on. Depending on your case, it can also create unwanted pressure into the case, or the case into the pin up toward the neck heel. (depends on the
padding)

I agree with Dave on the balance thing. I had a strap button on the heel cap on my last guitar and I always felt that it wanted to tip away from me. My current
guitar has it mounted on the treble side of the heel and feels much better from a control standpoint.

I would like to make the same strap button installation that kydave did on his guitar on my RK ROC57 CFE. Is installation safe on that guitar at that
location? There aren't any bolts like some Taylors have that I could be drilling into?

I'm pretty sure all the RKs have a dovetail joint, and if you proceed according to kydave's example, you should be fine.
