Stanford PSD-28 vs. PSD-21. Can U guess which is which? |
Lead | |

A bunch of short clips I put together. The same guitar is first in every clip (consistent) so as not to cause
confusion. This is the "Hog" Stanford PSD-21 and the EIR PSD-28. I put these together in a way that you can't see the back and/ or sides (a dead
giveaway). Both have that excellent signature tone, but different by comparison. I tuned both to standard pitch (440) for this one...... I'll reveal which
is the 21 and which is the 28 later in the thread. Any idea??? Preferences of one over the other tonally? BTW the last clip gets cut off before you can hear
the second guitar. Oh well.......

I say the mahogany is first in each clip.

I agree with Roy on this.
You forget it and I'll forget it, but I'll remember it, and don't you forget it!

I, unfortunately, don't have enough experience in comparing the two woods, but while I was listening to the clips and thinking about all the things
I've read about the tonal differences, I was thinking that the first guitar would have to be the mahogany. So, I side with Roy and Dave. They both sound
very nice and you did a great job with the comparison playing.

Ryan, I am thinking that #1 is the 21. I like the overall tone of the first guitar. Both sound great and sound suprisingly close in tone.

mahalo for this nice comparison clip, ryan. i've got to agree with the gentlemen above. to my ears and through my computer headphones, the first guitar has
slightly clearer string definition while the second guitar is warmer overall. first guitar is the hog. they both sound excellent.

I agree with lanaki on the string definition/clarity thing... I thought the same thing. I thought I could hear more overtones with the second guitar.

what's cool for me is that I can hear the difference. Like I said earlier, I don't have experience playing either woods, let alone comparing side by
side... I've always had a laminated box. I'm hoping guitar numero uno is the hog, cuz I like the sound of that one just a itsy bitsy teeny weeny bit
better.

I like the first one better. I thought it was the 28.

on some of the tunes i prefer the sound of the first guitar and vice versa. the differences are mostly subtle. the second guitar has a warmer bass response
from where i sit.

lanaki wrote: I agree with that assessment as well, which is interesting. Kind of goes along with the ideal often stated differences between mahogany and rosewood back and sides.

Well, since everyone else has picked guitar #1 as the PSD-21, I'll go ahead and say that the 21 is guitar #2. 50/50 chance right (unless Ryan messed with
us all and played the same guitar each time).

the one that is always played first. Might be kinda tough to tell but I can see it. Imagine if I had put brand new strings on both of these like I should have?
One has Elixirs that are a few months old. The other has uncoated strings that are a few weeks old. I figured it would even things out . I know! I'm nuts! Never said I wasn't...... .

Absolutely agree with lanaki's comments. This also bolsters the argument (esprcially for us married guys) that we need at LEAST one of each type. Overall I like the first one a bit better, and I assume that was the mahogony.
So many guitars....So little time.
So many taxes......So few guitars
